The Head of Global Facilities Management Service at the United Nations World Food Programme, Ms Christa Doodo, urged parents to support and nurture their children to unearth their talents.
She said, children needed support to bring out their creative and innovative ideas.
“I am asking parents for one thing, allow your children to spread their wings and fly, that is support their creativity and innovative ideas and guide them to make best choices in life to become responsible adults,” she said.
Ms Doodo made the plea at the St. Mary’s Senior High School’s 73rd Speech and Prize Giving Day held in Accra over the weekend on the theme, “Holistic Education of the Senior High School Girl; A Pre-Requisite to a Successful Life.”
She said the theme was aligned with the school’s vision “to provide holistic female education that empowers and develops learners’ distinctive competence for further studies, the work of world and meaningful adult life” seek to empower young women through their immediate environment.
Advising the students, Ms Doodo, a former student urged them to become well-rounded students who excel academically, to become financially stable adult.
“You have been given the unique gift of access to the world beyond your immediate environment, the gift to reach out to people to network, to develop your potential, to find your unique value and to have a successful life,” she added.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr Ebenezer Tagoe, who donated an amount of GH¢50,000 to the school and also gifted five students and teachers laptops worth GH¢50,000, urged the students to take their education seriously.
He said the donation was in fulfilment of a promise the Chief Executive Officer of VRA, Mr Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa made to the school last year.
“VRA has the objective of seeking excellence in everything that we do, so any area that we see excellence we gravitate towards it and we want to help in that, that is why we are here today to support them,” he said.
The Headmistress of the school, Miss Philomena Owusu Ansah said the event was a great honour to acknowledge the contribution of the “Pioneering Holy Spirit Sisters” who sacrificed in establishing the school.
She noted that, the school had produced notable women who have contributed to the growth and development of the country and the world as a whole.
The awardees included, Otoo Thelma Karley, Best WASSCE student 2022, Natasha Enyonam Kpodo-Englu, Best Maths and Science student, Mr Isaac Nortey, Best Teacher and the Best Food and Nutrition student went to Sophia Abigail Quartey.
