President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the chiefs and people of Fodzoku Traditional Area in the Volta Region to consider “riding on the back of the elephant” in future elections.
According to the President, although his administration was working to ensure its policies and programmes benefitted all Ghanaians including residents at Fodzoku and other communities in the Volta Region, the ruling party had not been fairly rewarded by voters.
In a meeting with a delegation from the Fodzoku Traditional Area at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday, President Akufo-Addo pledged to address the litany of challenges presented to him by the delegation and pleaded with voters in the area to also consider giving his party what it deserved in future election.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has, since the inception of the Fourth Republic, not been attractive to voters in communities in the Volta Region.
Although President Akufo-Addo recorded impressive victories in the 2016 and 2020 general elections, a large majority of voters in the Volta Region voted against him in both elections.
Having introduced policies such as Free Senior High School, Planting for Food and Jobs, among others which continued to benefit many Ghanaians including residents in the region, the President believes his party’s performance should have improved in the Volta Region in the last election.
“I have done all these things….and my benefit, I do not get my benefit. Always one way,” he said, drawing laughter at the meeting.
President Akufo-Addo said the party voters at Fodzoku always vote for during elections had ruled the nation for years, yet, they still had many unsolved problems in their communities.
“Myself, I come for a short period and solved some of the problems for you, but I don’t get my benefit,” he said and appealed to the people to, in the future, ride on the back of the elephant.
The delegation briefed the President on the final funeral and burial rites of the late Paramount Chief of the Area, Togbega Afum Asare III, who ruled from 1945 till his death in January 2019.
The delegation invited the President to attend the funeral of the late Paramount Chief.
