The Rebecca Foundation has donated hospital beds to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Kumasi South Hospital in the Ashanti Region to support healthcare delivery.
Making the presentation on behalf of the First Lady and Executive Director of the Foundation, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Kumasi, Mr Osei Assibey, said, the gesture formed part of the Foundation’s contribution to help combat the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the country.
“We continue to hear of reports of hospitals being overwhelmed and that has been compounded by the pandemic.
“I am convinced that this donation will help increase the capacity of both health facilities in the management of patients” he said.
Mr Assibey seized the opportunity to entreat members of the public to always adhere to the Ghana Health Service’s (GHS) safety protocols on COVID-19 to bring infection rates under control.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KATH, Dr Oheneba Owusu Danso, who received the beds on behalf of the health facilities thanked the Rebecca Foundation for the kind gesture.
“I am very overwhelmed with this kind donation from the First lady of the Republic. I strongly believe this gesture will help our ability to take care of our increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients,” he said.
Ghana currently has 6,938 active cases of COVID-19 with a death toll of 482.
Some 675 new infections confirmed on February 6, had increased the number of active cases to the present figure.
All 16 regions presently have active cases although Greater Accra leads the case count with 3,506.
So far, a total of 814,434 tests have been conducted in the country, of which, 73, 003 have come out positive.
However, 65,583 persons have recovered from the disease since it broke out in the country in March 2020.
Meanwhile, Ghana is to procure some 355,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to cover a population of 20 million Ghanaians.
The vaccines, AstraZeneca, which would be procured from Europe is expected in the country by end of the first week in March this year.
