The Queen Mothers’ Foundation of Ghana (QMF) has expressed concern about the increasing cases of barbaric killing of women by their husbands, saying the practice is a threat to the country’s development.
It has, therefore, called on the Police and the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection to intervene and put measures in place to curb the practice.
The President of the QMF, Nana Ama Serwaa Bonsu in an interview with the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday, condemned the growing murder of women by their husbands and called for stiffer and hefty punishment for husbands who committed such heinous crimes.
She also called for speedy trial of husbands who perpetrated violence against their wives or murdered their wives to serve as a deterrent to others.
According to her, the queen mothers in the country were worried about the growing practice where husbands murdered their wives over little misunderstanding.
“The reasons some men assign for killing their wives are absurd and awful. For a man to kill his wife because the wife did not cook for him or deny him sex, is unthinkable. How can you end the life of your own wife with this flimsy excuse,” she queried.
The President of QMF observed that no civil country would allow for the lives of their precious citizens to be sucked from them.
To this end, Nana Bonsu who is the Queen Mother of Offinso Kayera in Ashanti Region called on women groups in the country to condemn the recent killings of women.
She said QMF would soon hit the street to demonstrate against the increasing killing of women.
“We will also soon petition the Inspector General of Police, the Ministry of Gender and the Presidency to express our disgust about the needless killing of women,” Nana Bonsu said.
The President of QMF said the violence perpetrated against women in the country had persisted for too long, hence drastic measures must be put in place.
The country in recent months has witnessed the killing of so many women by their husbands.
The recent story was the alleged butchering of Lydia Amponsah Akoto, a 46-year old petty trade by husband at Jerusalem Number 8, near Zenu in the Kpone Katamanso of the Greater Accra Region reported by the Ghanaian Times in its Wednesday issue.
