The Algerian government has received, through the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a notification of acceptance of Algerian mediation aimed at promoting a political solution to the crisis in Niger.
The initiative forms part of the settlement plan presented by President of the Republic of Algeria, Mr Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad said in a statement issued in the capital Algiers on Monday.
“This decision supports the adoption of a political solution to this crisis and paves the way for a peaceful solution in the interests of Niger and the region as a whole,” it said.
President Tebbounne further instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf to travel to the Nigerien capital Niamey as soon as possible, in order to begin preparatory discussions on the implementation of the Algerian initiative with all the parties involved,” the statement concluded.
Algeria has proposed a six-month transition period in the country led by civilians.
Algeria was the first to propose to its neighbouring country a peaceful transitionto constitutional order.
In late August, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said Algeria had spoken several times to Niger’s military leaders and proposed such an initiative which would aim to “formulate political arrangements with the acceptance of all parties in Niger without excluding any party”.
On August 6, Algeria President Tebboune had “categorically” denounced any foreign military intervention in Niger, which borders Algeria to the south.
Algeria shares a 1,000-km southern land border with Niger.
