The second phase of the multi-staged Trial Census for the 2020 Population and Housing Census with listing of structures is underway in selected communities across the country.
A statement signed and issued by Professor Samuel Annim, Government Statistician, Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in Accra on Monday, said the Trial Census Night would be the midnight of Sunday November 24, while the actual field enumeration will begin from November 25 to December 7.
It said Aowin Municipality in the Western North Region, Ekumfi District in the Central Region, Kpone Katamanso Municipality in the Greater Accra Region and the Krachi Nchumuru District in the Oti Region, have been selected for the exercise.
While only a part of the Aowin and Kpone Katamanso Municipalities would be covered under the second Trial Census, the statement noted that the whole of the Krachi Nchumuru and Ekumfi Districts would be covered.
It said that census officials from GSS, appropriately identified, would visit the communities that have been selected for the Trial Census to identify and number houses and structures.
They will also ask some few questions including the use of the structure and the number of household’s resident in the structure etc, in preparation for the actual enumeration from November 25, it stated.
The statement noted that the information collected would be beneficial for decision making at the various levels of governance as well as for business decision-making and be used by industry and academia.
The GSS entreated all persons resident within the selected communities to cooperate with the census officials in order to ensure a successful Trial Census.
The Trial Census is in accordance with the United Nations’ recommendations guiding the conduct of Population and Housing Censuses worldwide.
It precedes the conduct of the Population and Housing Census which is in accordance with the Statistical Service Law, 2019 (Act 1003) that empowers the agency to conduct Population and Housing Census in Ghana every 10 years in March.
The Population and Housing Census takes detailed information of every single individual found within the borders of the country at a particular point in time, usually referred to as the Census Night.
