Kweku Boahen did not speak at NDC meeting – Witness

Mr Kweku Boahen, the Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), did not speak at the meeting in which he and Mr Samuel OfosuAmpofo allegedly plotted to attack the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission(EC), in 2019.

This came to light when Chief Inspector Bernard Berko, who investigated the accused, was cross-examined by Mr Tony Lithur, counsel for Mr Boahen.

The witness told the court, presided over by Justice Samuel Asiedu, a Court of Appeal judge, sitting with additional responsibility, that he has no evidence MessrsAmpofo and Boahen hatched a plan before the two met.

Mr Ampofo and Mr Boahenwere secretly recorded on their alleged plot to attack the EC and the National Peace Council.

The accused had been granted GH¢100,000 bail with a surety each, after they were charged with conspiracy to commit crime and assault.

Mr Ampofo has been charged with one count of conspiracy to cause harm and two counts of assault against a public officer while Mr Boahen was charged with one count of conspiracy to cause harm.

The case has been adjourned to March 16.

The facts are that accused were arraigned on April 16, 2019 for allegedly inciting communicators of the party to attack the chairperson of the EC, and the chairman of the National Peace Council.

Mr Ampofo and Mr Boahenwere said to have been secretly recorded on their plot of attack, on the target persons in an audio, which has gone viral.

Miss Gloria Akuffo, former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, then prosecuting, read the charges against accused in April, 2019.

She said Mr Boahen faces only a charge of conspiracy to cause harm, while his colleague was charged with all the three counts.

Mr Tony Lithur, then counsel for Mr Ampofo, told the court that his client could not speak about the alleged leaked tape because it was doctored.

Mr Lithur said the invasion of his client’s privacy related to the constitutional breach of Mr Ampofo’s rights.

Dr Abdul Basit Abdul Aziz Bamba, then counsel for Mr Boahen, said his client denied the charges filed against him, and added that Mr Boahen was innocent until proven guilty by the court.

He contended that the charges against Mr Boahen were not grounded in the law.
