The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has launched a new competition dubbed Division One League (DOL) Super Cup involving eight teams.

It will kick start from September 19 at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

The DOL Super Cup competition is an eight-team competition made up of the three Zonal champions, Real Tamale United, Bibiani Gold Stars, Accra Lions FC; three second-placed teams including Bofoakwa Tano, Skyy FC and Tema Youth as well as the two best third-placed teams in the just ended DOL, that is, Berekum Arsenal and FC Samartex 1996.

They would be classified into two groups of four teams to play a round-robin after which the two top teams from each group advance to the Semi-finals, with losers at this level going on to play a and winners engaging in a grand finale.

All participants will receive participation fees which will increase depending on their progression with the highest price going to the ultimate winner.

Speaking at the launch, chairman of the competition’s Organising Committee and Vice President of the GFA, Mr Mark Addo said the competition was the brainchild of the Association’s president, Kurt Okraku, aimed at changing the phase of Ghana football.

According to him, the DOL serves as a ground for identifying talents as well as serving as a feed-stock for the Premier League and potentially the national teams.

The competition he said, would be produced and telecast live by the GFA broadcast sponsors MAX TV with their partners for the whole country.

On his part, the GFA President Mr. Okraku said the Super Cup, the first of it kind, would from henceforth serve as a pre-season tournament for DOL clubs especially the three that qualified to the Premier League.

“It seek to motivate clubs to improve in performance, to cultivate youth development by nurturing talents and to ensure that they create the necessary platform for visibility for the DOL talents and to create additional competition for club to remain competitive.”

He revealed that the competition being played on the Football Association facility in Prampram is an agenda to place premium on the facility and put it to full use.
