The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Eastern Region has recovered an amount of GH¢2,457,747.25 from customers who engaged in various forms of illegalities to evade the payment of electricity bills from January to October 2022.
The monies were retrieved after the Revenue Protection Unit of the company intensified activities where they discovered that 36 meters were “by-passed”, 24 meters tampered with were recording low units; 19 meters were connected without authorisation; and three (3) people had connected power directly to their premises.
Other customers with challenges on their meters were rectified to ensure that the company raked in the needed revenue to sustain its operations.
The General Manager of ECG in the Eastern Region, Mrs Sariel Adobea Etwire, who made this known to the media in Koforidua, said the amount was an improvement over that of last year.
“Last year, the total energy recovered stood at 1.2 gigawatts amounting to GH¢1.26 million, however this year’s amount retrieved is an improvement and we hope to do more,” she said.
She noted the company had a vision to become financially viable and would not relent in revenue protection activities, to ensure that all customers using power without payment would be flushed out.
She noted that there were different avenues provided for customers to access the services of the company, advising that customers should approach the company in case of any challenge, and desist from engaging in illegalities.
“However, there are punitive measures to deal with customers who indulge in any form of illegalities and so we advise that people do the right thing,” she said.
Mrs Etwire said her outfit had undertaken various initiatives in the region to enable customers to enjoy a relatively stable power supply, and assured that her outfit would continue to work hard to keep the light on.
She urged customers to do their part by paying their bills promptly, and advised those who had not been receiving bills for some time to report to the nearest ECG office to avoid piling up of their monthly bills.
