Building contractor allegedly involved in robbery refused bail

An Accra Circuit Court has refused bail application filed by Mr. Ebenezer Ayensu, a building contractor, held for aiding and abetting armed robbery.

The building contractor is charged together with two others, now at large, and the Court presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah turned down the application because accused had jumped bail in a previous matter.

Police Inspector Samuel Ahiabor told the Court that on June 6, 2018, at 8:30pm, accused and two others at large hired the services of a taxi driver, at Dome Crossing, to convey them to Ohene-Down, at Dome Pillar II, all suburbs of Accra.

On the way, accused and two others asked the driver to park the car while one of the accused, who was seated behind him got down and stood at the driver’s door pretending to pay the fare.

Insp Ahiabor, said other occupants, who were seated at the back of the car, pulled cutlasses, and accused alighted, opened the driver’s door, pulled him (driver) out and ordered him to get to the back seat as he took over the steering wheel.

The court heard that while the two accomplices, now at large, sat side by side the complainant at the back, they drove him to Dome Crossing, physically abused him, pushed him out of the car and sped-off.

Insp Ahiabor said on August 29, 2018, the taxi driver reported to the Kwabenaya police that he had spotted the cab that was taken by the robbers, at Sowutuom Police Station, sprayed as a private car with a fake private registration number.

The court heard that when the police proceeded to Sowutuom Police Station with the complainant, he identified the car as his taxi, and accused as one of those who robbed him of his taxi.

Insp Ahiabor said the police at Sowutuom arrested the accused in possession of the car, and was granted bail by Accra Circuit Court 3.

He said accused executed the bail, but failed to appear for trial, which made the court to strike out the matter in June, last year.

Insp Ahiabor said accused has allegedly committed another offence, which was being investigated by Anti-Armed Robbery Unit at National Police Headquarters. – GNA
