Bagre Dam Spillage: PFAG urges farmers in White Volta Basin to evacuate

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has appealed to farmers along the White Volta Basin areas to evacuate to avoid being affected by the spillage of the Bagre Dam.

The spillage is scheduled to take place from Friday, August 27 to August 30, this year.

The annual spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso had led to the loss of lives, domestic animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and destruction of farm produce.

The president of the association, Mr Abdul-Rahman Mohammed who made the appeal through the Ghanaian Times here on Tuesday, indicated that as part of the sensitisation for the farmers to evacuate the low area, his outfit was using media platforms in the region to achieve that.

He stated that the association on Tuesday involved officials from his outfit and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to educate farmers on the “Nabina FM” in the Kassena-Nankana West District and “Radio A One” in the Bolgatanga municipality.

Mr Mohammed stated that more media houses in the region would be engage to join the sensitisation efforts and advised farmers that their lives were more important than their farming activities.

He therefore urged them to listen to the advice of NADMO and move away from the low dangerous areas to higher grounds.

The Head of Programmes and Advocacy at PFAG, Mr Benjamin Sarfo, who was part of the radio discussions, admonished farmers to desist from farming closer to the White Volta Basin.

He advocated the de-silting of the basin which was part of the cause of the perennial flood.

Mr Sarfo further attributed the flooding to farming very close to the basin and underscored the need for the government to enforce a buffer zone law to help curb the trend.
