The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), is undertaking a project to prevent road crashes and fatalities at London Market Street, in Accra.
It would start on Thursday, April 7, 2022 and completed in three months’ time.
The Tactical Urbanism $25,000 project, would ensure the provision of pedestrian crossing, speed limit sign, road line marking and ramble strips.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times during a familiarisation tour of London Market Street area, led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Ms Elizabeth Naa Kwaotso Tawiah Sackey, Mr Samuel Boamah Danquah, Coordinator, Road Design and Transportation at BIGRS, described the area as accident prone.
For this reason, the MCE said there was the need to intensify road safety education and enforcement of traffic regulation in the area.
Mr Danquah said speed limit analysis conducted by AMA and BIGRS showed that motorists drove 60 km per hour way above the acceptable 30km limit in densely populated areas.
He said in addition to road marking and other prevention signs pedestrian crossing signs on the 300 metres street to prevent needless accidents would be provided.
Mr Danquah urged residents of the area to keep their surroundings clean.
Ms Elizabeth Sackey said good sanitation practice was a shared responsibility that require residents to take responsibility for the waste they generate.
She said the “Operation clean your frontage” project is in line with government’s agenda of making Accra, the cleanest city in Africa.
