‘Allow Mahama to go unopposed as flag bearer’

Abdul Aziz Mohammed, former Member of Parliament for Mion, has appealed to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to allow former President John Mahama to go unopposed as presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.

“Former Mahama who contested the 2020 elections on the ticket of the NDC and lost to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the only one poised to recapture power for the party given his proven record and popularity,” he stressed.

Mr Mohammed contended that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was uncomfortable with the return of the former president and his status in the party after losing the 2020 polls but would seek to lead the party again in the 2024 elections.

Responding to comments by the Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Richard Nyamah, about the status of former President Mahama in the NDC, Mr Mohammed stressed that the former president would seek to lead the party again in the 2024 elections.

“On the issue of whether former President Mahama is the leader of the party or not, I know the fears the NPP have about the former president, let me tell you without any fear of contradiction that former President Mahama will put himself forward for re-election as our flagbearer,” he proffered.

Mr Mohammed suggested acclamation rather than a contest for the former president saying “left to me as an individual we should go for popular acclamation, whoever has an ambition to lead the party can do that after former President Mahama and we must hold ourselves together”.

“The only way we can hold ourselves together as a party is to allow the former president who has proven to be very popular by his legacy to continue to lead our party into the next elections,” he pointed out. –starrfm.com.gh
