346,098 candidates write WASSCE examination April 15

A total of 346,098 candidates are to participate in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scheduled to commence on April 15.

A statement signed and issued by Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Head of Public Affairs, West African Examination Council (WAEC), in Accra yesterday, said the candidates, who were registered from 987 schools, would take the examinations at 707 centres across the country.

It said the examination, which would end on June 7, has male and female candidature of 170,867 and 175,231 respectively, representing a 9.2 per cent increase on the 2018 total number of 316,980.

In order to address increasing cases of impersonation recorded in school examinations, all candidates taking part in this year’s examinations would be biometrically verified, according to the statement.

It assured the public that WAEC had put in place all the necessary measures to ensure the examination was conducted successfully.

The statement further advised the candidates to be wary of the activities of website operators, who peddle fake questions on social media presenting them as authentic papers.

Additionally, the candidates were to adhere to the rules and regulations of the examination and to refrain from engaging in any form of examination malpractice which could lead to the withholding or cancellation of their results, it said.

The Council asked for the support of the public, and all stakeholders, especially supervisors and invigilators in safeguarding the integrity of the examination.
