Police investigate missing pistol

Ashanti Regional Police Command has begun investigations into the missing pistol of the police bodyguard of the Minister of Railways Development, Mr Joe Ghartey.

The minister and his bodyguard lodged a complaint at the police headquarters over a stolen pistol, which was said to be loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition.

Mr Ghartey and his bodyguard were in Ashanti Region for official duty, and joined executives of the party at a funeral of a female activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A Police source told the Ghanaian Times that no personal belongings of the minister were stolen apart from the gun.

According to the source, it was not clear if the gun was stolen from the room of the minister at the Georgia Hotel, where he lodged, through burglary as reported, since there was no trace to that effect.

The source said: “The police suspect the bodyguard might have misplaced the gun in the hotel, which he couldn’t recollect where he placed it, this can’t be burglary.’’

However, the source assured the general public that a team of investigators have been assigned to investigate the matter, including the staff of Georgia Hotel, who were on duty at the time the gun was allegedly stolen from the facility, at the weekend.
