A 27-year-old mentally challenged, last Friday allegedly attacked and killed his grandparents with a sharp cutlass, at New Town Extension, a suburb of Sunyani in Bono Region.
Eric Amoah, killed Madam Mary Amosi, 87, grandmother, and John Kwadwo Amoah, 91, grandfather, married couple, whilst they were asleep.
But, Grace Akon, 16, who managed to escape the attack on the family, suffered deep cutlass wounds on the left arm.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) went to the Sunyani Police station concerning the case, a personnel on duty confirmed the incident, but failed to further comment, saying the case had been reported at the Regional Police headquarters.
The police have deposited the bodies at a mortuary in Sunyani, and arrested and placed the suspect in police custody.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the family house of the married couple, opposite the Petra Hotel, where the tragedy occurred, many people were seen and heard discussing the matter.
Meanwhile, some residents who spoke to GNAsaid they were yet to recover from the shock of the incident.
Briefing the GNA, Mrs Esther Amoah, sister and care-giver of the married couple, said the suspect, who was suffering from epilepsy and on psychiatric drugs, stayed in the family house..
She said the family realised that the suspect appeared aggressive and violent, adding that, “Just last three days, l took him to the Sunyani Regional Hospital and he was provided with psychiatric drugs.’
Mrs Esther Amoah said the condition of the suspect improved after she personally started giving him the drugs, adding that “even yesterday, his behaviour was normal, only that he appeared drowsy after taking his drugs.”
She said, “we just heard unusual noise in the house and when we came out from our rooms, we saw that the suspect had broken into the room of his grandparents and slayed the couple with their bodies lying in a pool of blood.”
Mrs Esther Amoah said the family reported the incident to the police, who arrested the suspect and took the bodies away. – GNA
