The circuit court in Accra has granted GH₵150,000.00 bail with three sureties to a 25-year-old self-acclaimed businessman, Justice Mensah, over alleged GH₵289,4000 recruitment scam.
The court presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, ordered that one of the three sureties should earn not less than GH₵2,000.00 and another surety should operate business with not less than GH₵100,000.00 in his bank account.
Another surety should have a permanent place of abode and work within the court’s jurisdiction and his or her monthly turnover should not be less than GH₵1,500.00.
The court has ordered Mensah to report to the police every Wednesday until the final determination of the case
Mensah,who has denied defrauding Mr Bernard Wellington, MsCatherine Konadu and MrKwakuAcquah, would re-appear before court on April 20.
Police Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah told the court that the complainants, Wellington, a teacher, resides at Odobeng, MsKonadu, also a teacher, resides at Takoradi and MrAckah, unemployed, resides at Tarkwa while Mensah resides at Adenta, Accra.
The prosecution said in January last year, accused dressed in military uniform informed some people, including KwasiAbbam and Eric Oppong that he was a military officer and had protocol slots to recruit interested youth into the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service and other security agencies at a fee between GH₵5,000.00 and GH₵8,000.00.
Chief InspAnquandahsaid Oppong, then a National Service personnel, informed Wellington that accused was enlisting people into the various security agencies.
Prosecution said accused asked Wellington to mobilise people who were interested in the recruitment.
Chief InspAnquandah said Wellington mobilised five people, including his relatives, children of a headmaster and gave GH₵35,000.00 to accused.
The court heard that Mensah also asked MsKonadu to mobilise 13 interested persons, and collected GH¢108,500.00 from them.
Chief InspAnquandahsaid MrAckahmobilised 22 persons in Kumasi, and accused collected GH¢145,900.00 from them, under the pretext of recruiting them into the security agencies.
Prosecution said Mensah failed to fulfil his promise and went into hiding.
Chief InspAnquandah said Mensah was arrestED and in his caution statement admitted the offence and pleaded with the police to give him time to refund the money. – GNA
