Man arrested for allegedly defiling 12 school girls

A 35-year-old man, Rashid Ahmed, popularly known as Anata, has been remanded by the Wa Circuit Court in the Upper West Region for allegedly defiling 12 school girls aged between nine and 15.

The accused has been on the run since May this year, after the incident became public knowledge until he was finally arrested at Wa over the weekend and processed to court.

Residents thronged the court premises on Monday to witness the hearing of the case which was adjourned to August 14 this year.

According to the court record on the case, the suspect is alleged to have defiled 12 school girls between 2021 and 2023, including a deceased teenage girl.

He is alleged to have given the girls GH¢10 each after having unprotected sex with them and also promised to use his influence as a wedding MC to get them to dance on stage during such ceremonies.

Anata who lived with his wife at Wa, lured his victims to either his house or a nearby bush to defile them and cautioned them against talking to other people about the act.

An official complaint was made to the police and they launched a manhunt for the suspect who allegedly fled Wa to Burkina Faso.

A Principal State Attorney of the region, Mr Saeed Abdul Shakur, prosecuting told journalists after the court adjournment that his team would ensure justice was served.

The lawyer was confident that

the suspect who was first arrested in 2014 on similar accusation but discharged for lack of witnesses had ran out of luck as there was substantive evidence and witnesses to follow through to the end.

“This is the first time in my fifteen years of practice as a lawyer that I have seen such numbers of people in court so you can see the anger in the people on this case,” he said.

He appealed to witnesses on the case, the public and the media to sustain their interest in the matter and support the judicial system to get to the end of the matter.
