Bawumia’s running mate:  Consider Ga people for Veep… G/A supporters appeal to NPP

A number of prominent opinion leaders and supporters of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) in the Greater Accra Region are putting forward a strong demand for the ruling NPP to impress upon its 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to choose a Ga as running mate.

According to them, the Ashantis, Akyem and the north have had their share of being the President or the Vice Presidents and the time has come for the Gas to be considered.

The source listed names like Ayikwei Otoo, Daniel McKorley (McDan), Elisabeth Sackey, Okoe Boye, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Oboshie Sai Kwofie, Henry Quartey and Lord Commey, as industrious personalities who had the charisma to help Dr Bawumia and the NPP achieve their 2024 goal.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghanaian Times, a source who claimed to be speaking on behalf of opinion leaders but pleaded anonymity stressed that, they believed there were equally good and competent Gas who can partner Dr Bawumia to prosecute the break the “8 agenda.”

The source emphasised that the opinion leaders in the Greater Accra, who were Ga Dangme indigenes were not happy with the party’s continuous neglect of Gas to occupy key positions in the party, especially when it came to the presidency.

“We want the party to choose a running mate from qualified Gas to partner with the newly elected flagbearer, Dr Bawumia for the 2024 election.

“It is straightforward; we request that someone of Ga tribe be chosen as the running mate for the 2024 elections. Several Gas qualify and are influential enough to help the NPP win more votes in the Greater Accra Region,” he said.

According to the source, it is a fact that some Ga stalwarts played various key roles in the United Party (UP), the mother party and tradition of the NPP, with the Ga ‘Shifimokpee’ being one of the political parties that came together to form the UP.

These personalities of Ga origin, he said, were founding members of the great tradition whose legacies deserve to be remembered and honoured, but unfortunately, it appears the Ga people had been relegated to the background in the NPP.

He also emphasised that Greater Accra held the key to the success of any political party and that should the NPP consider that and factor the appointment of a Ga as NPP running mate, the better the party’s chances of breaking the eight.

He said the opinion leaders were confident that the party’s leadership would act on their request because as a region, they also strategically decide the outcome of general elections.

“Our party always struggle to win this region but we know once the NPP selects a Ga person as running mate, our fortunes in the region will change because Ashanti Region is not the only region that can win power for the party,” they stressed.
