150,400 expected to take COVID-19 jabs as vaccination takes off in 11 district hotspots today

A total of 150,400 people are expected to take the Johnson and Johnson single-shot vaccines by the end of a vaccination exercise rolled out by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in 11 hotspot districts.

While 100,000 people are likely to take the vaccines in seven districts in the Greater Accra Region, some 50,400 persons are targeted to receive their jab in four districts of the Ashanti Region.

The exercise already begun in the Ashanti Region would last six days (from August 13 to August 18) while that of the Greater Accra Region will last five days (from today August 16 to August 20).

Beneficiary districts are; Accra Metro, Ablekuma Central, Adentan, Ga South, Kpone-Katamanso, Okaikoi North, Tema Metro, Asokwa, Kumasi Metro, Kwadaso and Oforikrom, which have been identified by the GHS as hotspots for spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In all, over 90 vaccination sites have been designated for the exercise including mobile teams to administer the vaccines in the identified areas.

According to the GHS, “the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine and will be given to those who have never had any of the COVID-19 vaccines.”

All persons aged 18 and above who live in the designated districts, with the exception of pregnant women are eligible for vaccination although preference would be given to persons 60 years and above and those with underlying conditions.

The Service has advised those who have already received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccination and are waiting for the second dosage not to get the Johnson and Johnson vaccine since mixing the vaccines is not recommended.

Eligible residents of the selected districts are advised to go with any national ID card when visiting a vaccination centre.

“Vaccination dates for persons who reside in other districts will be announced in due course,” a statement from the Public Relations Unit of the GHS stated.

For Accra Metro; individuals within the Ablekuma sub-metro could visit the Mamprobi Hospital, Mamprobi Police Station, Adwoa Boatemaa Clinic, Korle Bu Police Station, Chorkor Police Station, Korle Gonno Methodist, Chorkor Chemuena while other mobile teams would be designated to the area.

The Ashiedu Keteke sub-metro has vaccination centres including Ussher polyclinic, PML Hospital, Makola Clinic, Judiciary Service Clinic, Ghana Post Clinic, GCB Clinic, Fire Service Clinic and the Customs Point.

The Kpone Katamanso District has Kpone Polyclinic, Zenu Health Centre, Katamanso Health Centre, Apollonia Health Centre, 1 MRS Michel Camp, New Crystal Hospital, Oyibi Health Centre, Valley View University Hospital and Gbetsile Clinic, as designated vaccination sites.

In Tema South, the Tema General Hospital is designated as a vaccination centre, the Manhean Polyclinic and Bankuman CHPS Compound will cater for people in the Manhean sub-metro, Tema Community One will have people being vaccinated at the Metro Health Directorate and the TMA Maternity and Children’s Clinic while the Bethel Hospital will be the centre for vaccination in the Tema North sub-metro.

The Adentan District is divided into four sub-municipals; Gbentanaa has Fafraha Health Centre and a mobile team on hand to vaccinate people, Nii Ashale has the Botwe Health Centre and Ogbojo Polyclinic, Koose Sub-Metro has Amrahia Health Centre and Amanfrom Health Centre as vaccination sites while people in the Sutsurinaa Sub-Metro could go to the Adiringanor Health Centre.

For the Ablekuma Central District, the vaccination sites are; the St Martins Memorial Hospital, New Cross Medical Centre, JOY Clinic, Barnor Memorial Hospital, Living Stone, PPAG Office, Robert Medical Centre, Makwa Clinic, GAKIA, Prime Care Medical Centre, Makay Medical Centre, Russia Pentecost, St Luke Methodist (Abossey Okai), Abossey Okai Presby and the Zongo Junction Presby.

In the Okaikoi North District, people in the Abeka Sub-Metro could visit; Ankam Medical Centre, Prince of Peace Maternity Home, Fadama Mosque, Abeka Methodist Church, Opman Clinic, Abotare Royal Golden Age Clinic, Emmanuel Hospital and Education Directorate, for their jabs.

Within the same district, those in the Akweteman Sub-Metro could take their shots at the Lapaz Community Hospital (main), Lapaz Market, Nkordasusua Pentecost Church, Al Ayar Hospital, Achimota Market, Alogoshie CHPS and the C.A.C CHPS.

The rest could visit the Achimota Hospital, Midway Hospital, Lapaz Community Hospital Annex, Achimota School Police Station, Kisseman Market and Achimota Terminal Clinic.

For the Ga South District, people living in the Amanfro Sub-Metro could take their shots at the Amanfro Polyclinic, Ga South Municipal Assembly and Franbel Hospital.

Others in the Krokrobite Sub-Metro could visit the Kokrobite Health Centre, Finney Hospital, Tuba Community Clinic, while the Bortianor Sub-Metro has the Bortianor Polyclinic, Aplaku Health Centre, All Faith Hospital, Accra West Medical Centre and the West Hills Mall as designated vaccination sites.

In the Ashanti Region, the Maternal and Child Health Hospital, KMA Clinic, Manhyia Hospital, Sepe Aprampram Health Centre, Moshie Zongo Hospital, Mater Dei Hospital, Suntreso Government Hospital, County Hospital, have been earmarked as vaccination centres.
