Graphic Communication Group Limited (GCGL) in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, on Friday held a regional stakeholders dialogue meeting on sanitation dubbed ‘Clean Ghana campaign’ in Techiman, the Bono East Regional capital.
The meeting was to whip up the interest of the public to improve on their sanitation practices, deliberate on sanitation challenges of the region and to come out with effective strategies to address them.
Mr Kwame Asare Boadu, the Deputy News Editor of Daily Graphic, in a speech read for his Editor, Mr Kobby Asmah said the clean Ghana campaign being sponsored by Zoomlion Ghana limited was key to national development.
The Deputy News Editor noted that the campaign was part of the company’s strategy, to impact society as a business saying that, “we have earmarked this year to drive awareness and education on improved sanitation nationwide. “
Mr Boadu indicated that on April 28 this year, GCGL’s National Sanitation Awareness Campaign was launched in Accra, with a call on strict enforcement of sanitation bye – laws and the naming and shaming of offenders.
“We have been to the Ashanti, Oti, Volta, Eastern and Bono regions. We are here today at Techiman in the Bono East region. The rest of the regions will be visited with the clean Ghana campaign,” he told the gathering.
The Bono East Regional Minister, Mr Adu Gyan was happy the government in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, was constructing a recycling plant in the region for effective and efficient management of municipal solid waste.
“The plant will also produce organic compost for horticultural and agronomic purposes, a reduction in the high rate of plastic pollution and the processing of waste such as plastic, paper and metal for reuse”, Mr Gyan emphasised.
The Regional Minister noted that the 15 million Euros project, when completed would create 75 direct and 250 indirect jobs adding that the plant will process solid waste from Techiman, Kintampo, Nkoranza and Wenchi municipalities and districts.
Mr Gyan said the project, which was in line with the United Nation’s sustainable development goals, would assist the region to meet good health, well-being, clean water, sanitation, decent work, economic growth, sustainable cities and communities.
The Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana,Mr George Manu, noted the distribution of one million bins, the formation of Zoom kids and Zoom ambassadors in Junior and Senior high schools in the region as strategies to an improved sanitation.
Oheneba Owusu Antwi – Bosiako II, the Dabehene of Techiman traditional council, who chaired the meeting, urged the powers that be to enforce bye – laws on sanitation to deter others from engaging in it.
