WPL: Thunder Queens stun Police Ladies

Thunder Queens shocked Police Ladies 2-1 in their Southern Zone Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League season opener played at the Presec Park in Legon, Saturday.

The Queens took a 2-0 lead through Gifty Osei and Ellen Gyemaah before Mary Berko reduced the deficit from a spot kick.

Police Ladies were in fine form coming into the game and were tipped to carry the day but that did not happen as Thunder Queens Head Coach Kwame Aboagye mapped out a strategy to combat the law enforcers.

That did not stop the visitors from having a good start as Jane Ayieyam, Mawusi Gbenyo and Grace Animah probed for the opener as they kept the goal area of the host boiling with incessant attacks.

Midway through the game, the Queens found their way past the defence of Police but failed to find the back of the net.

Three minutes after recess GiftyOsei had it right when she beat the Police Ladies backline to slot past goalkeeper FafaliDumehasifor the opener.

That gingered the Queens as they probed further for more goals and were rightly rewarded on the 75th minute mark when Gyemaah beautifully connected home the second goal.

Eight minutes after that goal, Police reduced the margin from a spot kick converted by Berko after Ayieyam was brought down in the penalty box.

The same fixture last season saw Police Ladies rally from two goals down to draw 2-2 at the Dansoman Carl Reindorf Park and it looked like history repeating itself as they pressed their opponents but the Queens held their guards until referee Rita NkansahBoateng called for the end of the game.

At the Sekondi Gyandu Park, a 79th minute strike from Doreen Copson was all former champions Hasaacas Ladies needed to beat visiting Berry Ladies.

Matilda Bless Fodu scored the only goal at the Swedru Stadium as visiting Faith Ladies defeated Soccer Intellectuals 1-0.

Harriet Adjetey, Zinatu Alhassan, Zenabu Mumuni and Nancy Opoku helped Army Ladies put four goals past Lady Strikers at the Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape Coast.

In the Northern Zone games, Supreme Ladies gave debutants Candy Soccer Academy a baptism of fire with a 5-0 thrashing at the BanatamaAstro Turf while Pearl Pia Ladies held Prisons Ladies to a goalless drawn game.

Tamale Super Ladies and Ashtown Ladies drew 1-1 with AmpemDarkoa also drawing with Northern Ladies at the OheneAmeyaw Park Techiman.
