Woman in trouble for allegedly causing harm to girl, 4

The Circuit Court in Ashaiman, has remanded Agnes Nukru, a 40-year-old trader, into police custody, for causing burns on the body of a four-year-old- girl.

Accused pleaded not guilty, and the case has been adjourned to April 28.

Nukru is accused of unlawfully and intentionally placing the girl in a pan containing boiling water, which caused burns and wounds to her private part, buttocks, and toes.

The court presided over by Mr Richard Delali Anku directed prosecution to file witness statement before the adjourned date.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dorothy Boadu Pepra, told the court that the complainant, Fuseina Salifu, 32, who resides at Official Town-Ashaiman, is the biological mother of the victim.

Nukru, who lives at Gbetslie, near Ashaiman, is a sister–in–law to the complainant.

ASP Pepra said in September 2021, the complainant got a job at Ashaiman, and needed to relocate, and asked accused to take temporary custody of the girl.

Prosecution said when complainant wanted to visit Nukru and the victim, the accused declined and said they had travelled.

ASP Pepra said in December 2021, Salifu paid a surprise visit to accused and realised that the victim had wounds on her buttocks, genitals and toes.

Prosecution said when complainant confronted the accused, she (accused) claimed that the victim had diarrhoea, so she placed her in a pan containing boiled water as a form of medication, but the girl suffered burns.

The court heard that accused promised to take the victim to hospital for treatment, but instead went to the pharmacy shop to buy medicines for the girl.

ASP Pepra said complaint reported the case to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU),  at Ashaiman, leading to the arrest of accused. -GNA
