Wilmar Africa wins SC trophy tourney

Wilmar Africa, producers of Frytol Oil and Fortune rice last Saturday lifted this year’s edition of the annual Standard Chartered (SC) trophy five-aside soccer tournament staged at the Lizzy Sports Complex.

Wilmar came from behind twice to win 5-3 over Voltic at the end of regulation time.

Wilmar stormed through the group phase after overcoming Ghacem, Far East and Speciality Fat before accounting for Vanguard 7-2 and Promasidor 4-0 in the quarter and Semi-final stages respectively.

Meanwhile Voltic also beat Interplast, Sika Krobea and Chase at the group stage before upstaging Shoprite 2-1 and Transcend 3-2 in the quarter and Semi – finals respectively to set up a final between the two sides.

A total of 20 corporate institutions participated in this year’s competition.

The victors received a trophy and also won the prized ticket for a visit to Anfield from May 11-14.

At Anfield the team will engage in training sessions at the Club, tour facilities at Anfield as well as interact with a number of Liverpool legends.

They would also represent Ghana at special corporate games where they will be managed by former Liverpool legend Philip Babb.

Captain of Voltic, Bernard Tackie was presented with the golden boot award after netting a total of 15 goals in six games.

In the SC staff games, Gye Naabu maintained their status as champions.

Head, Corporate Affairs, Brand & Marketing of the bank, Addae Asiedua congratulated Wilmar on their victory and urged them to go on to win the International event on their Anfield trip.

Special guest Phil Babb who will manage the side at their games in Anfield was full of praise for his new side.
