Dr Charles Wereko-Brobbey has urged the populace not to fall for the calls being made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Chief Justice to step aside in an alleged $5million bribe in order to influence a decision at the Supreme Court.
He explained that calls by the NDC for a Commission of Inquiry into the allegations against the Chief Justice should be considered as purely political comments and must be dismissed.
The Chief Justice, Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, had been accused of demanding a $5 million bribe from a traditional authority but had eventually denied the allegation and petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to look into the issue.
But Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the NDC, called for the Chief Justice to step aside for investigation into the allegation but Dr Wereko-Brobbey disagreed and insisted that if the chief had come out to say the Chief Justice Anin-Yeboah demanded the said amount from him, or he was made to pay the said amount, then the issue would have demanded more merit “but as it is, it is hearsay, and it should be dismissed for what it is”.
However, Mr Nketia indicated that good governance dictated the Chief Justice stepped aside during the pendency of the investigation by the Judicial Service relative to the issue of alleged misconduct on his part as a Supreme Court Judge.
According to him, Chief Justice Anin-Yeboah could not be a judge in his own cause, hence could not set up a committee to investigate allegation of misconduct against himself.
A private legal practitioner, Akwasi Afrifa, while responding to a petition filed against him at the General Legal Council alleged that a former client he was representing at the Supreme Court told him that the Chief Justice had demanded $5 million bribe from him to allegedly influence a Supreme Court case in his favour. –ghanaweb.com
