We’ll state our position on Ayawaso disturbances white paper soon–NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will soon state its position on the government’s white paper on the Justice Emile Short Commission of Enquiry into the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election disturbances report.

The election was characterised with violence leading to some people being injured and properties destroyed. Though the Commission of Enquiry completed its investigations in February it subsequently handed over its report to the government on March 14. However, the government after six months issued the white paper and rejected most of the recommendations made by the commission.

The commission chaired by Justice Emile Short was established on February 8, 2019,  by President Nana Akufo-Addo to initiate a full inquiry into circumstances of, and establish the facts leading to events associated with the violence during the by-election held on January 31, in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the NDC, said their legal team was studying the white paper and would respond in their own time and the report and the white paper had been submitted to the legal team and would respond officially in their own chosen time.

He added that it doesn’t prevent other stakeholders from making their individual comments but as a political party it would come out and state its position in the coming days.

The government formed the Commission of Enquiry to look into the violence recorded as part of continuous support and assistance in unraveling the truth behind the disturbances.

Events leading to the election saw some National Security Operatives allegedly firing gunshots at a polling centre at La Bawaleshie, injuring six persons believed to be NDC supporters during the election on Thursday, January 31, 2019, subsequently, the party opted out of the race claiming they took the decision to forestall further attacks on their members.

As civil society organisations including the Coalition of Election Observers (CODEO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) condemn the violence that characterised the by-election, President Akufo-Addo assured the citizenry that individuals found culpable would be dealt with. -citinewsroom.com
