The police have assured the international community and the citizenry of their readiness to deal with recent armed robberies in some parts of the country.
According to the Police Service, it was poised to fight all robberies, adding that Ghana still remained the safest country in the sub region.
The Director-General of Legal and Prosecution Department, Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye gave the assurance during the handover of refurbished Information Technology classroom and computer laboratory by the German Government to the Ghana Police Service at the National Police Training School at Tesano in Accra yesterday.
The new facilities would enable the police officer to gain more experience in the field of information technology.
The project, funded by German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur International Zumsammenarbait(GIZ), is part of “Programme to build and strengthen the police structures in selected partner countries in Africa’’
COP Boakye who represented the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, said the Ghana Police Service was committed to its vision to become a world class police service capable of delivering a planned, democratic, protective and peaceful service up to the standard of international best practices.
He said the German Government had, among others, supported the training of personnel at the Police Professional and Standard Bureau and provided the community policing with 15 motor bikes and 57 public address systems, projectors, screens and laptops.
“Together we are also developing an aide memoire on community policing for police for police officers and a brochure that shares our belief and concepts with the wider public, ’’he added
He thanked the German Government for their support to the Police Service.
The Ambassador of Federal the Republic of Germany to Ghana, Mr Daniel Krull, urged the Police Service to strive for professionalism, saying “a police service that is trusted by the public, one that pro-actively fights police misconduct and prevent crime and building a strong relationship with its citizens.”
The Ambassador stressed the need to support the security sectors, adding “we are impressed on Ghana’s democratic history, respect for the rule of law and human rights.”
Present at the ceremony included members of the Police Management Board, senior police officers,GIZ Country Director, Ms Regina Bauerochse Barbosa and Mr Philpp Niehanke, programme Manager of GIZ.
