We’ll arrest those who flout social distancing directive – UW Police Commander

The Upper West Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Francis Aboagye Nyarko has cautioned residents against flouting the social distancing protocol and the ban on social gatherings, aimed at reducing the spread of the coronavirus.

The commander stated that citizens who did not obey the directives that were issued by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to check the spread of the coronavirus would be arrested and made to face the law to serve as deterrent to others.

DCOP Nyarko stated this on the sidelines of a donation of sanitary items and personal protective equipment to the command by Apsonic Motors in Wa on Wednesday.

The items which included 750 pieces of nose masks, five pieces of medical infrared red thermometers, Veronica buckets and reflectors were intended to assist the police personnel discharge their duties safely.

DCOP Nyarko hinted that the police had arrested some persons from Wa and Tumu respectively, for flouting the ban on social gatherings and had been granted police enquiry bail to assist with investigations.

“We have stationed informants in some of the communities and they are assisting us to identify people who flout the ban on social gatherings. We are also working closely with the Municipal and District Chief Executives to enforce every directive by the President in line with the Imposition of Restriction Act, 2020,” he said.

DCOP Nyarko indicated that the command had succeeded in getting drivers of commercial vehicles to reduce the size of passengers to a reasonable number.

He commended Apsonic Motors for the long standing relationship between them and the police, saying the delivery would go a long way to enhance the performance of the police.

For his part, Alhaji Zakari Muskilla of the Upper West branch of the Apsonic Motors who presented the items to the police indicated that the donation was one of the numerous supports his outfit had given to the Police to encourage them to work harder.

He emphasised that the move was to appreciate the efforts of the police towards the reduction of crime as well as maintaining law and order in the region.

“We want to support the quest of the police with these items so that they will be able to discharge their duties diligently to the public, whilst safeguarding their own health as well,” he added.
