The Wassa-East District is being transformed with entrepreneurial governance strategy where the private sector and NGOs are collaborating with the public sector to achieve some development, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Wilson Arthur has said.
This corporate strategic plan explains the special support from Numa Water, an NGO covering 80 per cent of Wassa-East’s water needs, Aseda Foundation and Goshen Training Institute facilitating skill training and youth empowerment along with Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the assembly.
Other supporting partners are the Western University State of Canada (WUSC), Cocolife Training support, Skyy Media Group social investment and media support.
Mr Arthur, who is also the Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), told the GNA in an interview that the governance strategy was among other things, to showcase the development plan of the assembly as part of efforts to make Wassa-East a model district in the country.
The DCE placed on record that the assembly had achieved so much under social interventions like the LEAP, which had added over 1,000 beneficiaries especially People With Disability (PWDs).
Mr Arthur said he lobbied Skyy Power Media Group to sponsor the assembly to redo a digital album now adopted nation-wide.
The move, he noted, “saw our PWDs list go up from 455 to 1,320 and we religiously and faithfully spent on their welfare by opening up income stream for them”.
Mr Arthur announced that so far, close to 1,100 PWDs have been served and by December, “every PWD would have been impacted”.
On the educational front, the DCE recalled that the Teachers’ Awards Scheme had been abandoned some years back with the excuse of no funds.
The DCE who is also the Dean of MMDCEs in the Western Region, was elated to announce that two years running,” there has been awesome celebration of teachers with competitive prizes like laptops, tablets, gas cookers, TV sets, refrigerators and more with the 2020 edition slated for October”.
Mr Arthur said the assembly also paid for Mock Examinations for BECE candidates and supported school sporting activities with excellence.
The assembly also added 20 school feeding slots to the existing 23.
Touching on the agricultural sector, the DCE admitted that Farmers’ Day in Wassa-East had become more attractive.
He explained that first prizes had been upgraded from bicycles to two tri-cycles (aboboya) and other valuable items like motorised sprayers, corn mills and others, plus entertainment additions like food fair, inter-area council soccer festival to see talents and free skills service.
The DCE added that the assembly had also improved upon water systems at Tosen, Mamponso and Nsuta.
