The General Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Volta Region, Mr Emmanuel Lumor, has expressed misgivings over the growing trend in the importation of electricity metres from Togo by some recalcitrant people for installation in households in Ghana at exorbitant fees.
According to him, some assembly members were involved in the cross-border business which is adversely affecting the fortunes of the ECG, and also posing danger to the company’s customers.
“The imported meters are substandard and likely to cause fire outbreaks,” MrLumor warned at a meeting with members of the Ketu South Municipal Assembly last Thursday.
He pointed out that assembly members had no mandate whatsoever to install electricity metres and warned that the ECG would readily prosecute them for such conducts, irrespective of their status.
Mr Lumor said that the assembly members were representatives of their electorate and were, therefore, closer to the customers in their electorate than the company.
For that matter, he affirmed that the ECG was ready to work together with the assemblies to ensure quality service to customers and guarantee their safety as well.
Meanwhile, Mr Lumor said that ECG had upgraded some single-phase networks to three- phases and was also poised to put up a switching station at Akatsi to ensure stable power supply to households and industries.
He said that the company had also embarked on an exercise to clear trees interfering in power lines, to avoid danger to the public.
