Voter turnout, processes satisfactory-EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday stated that it is generally satisfied with the voter turnout and the voting processes in the nationwide district level elections however, delayed in a few polling stations.

It said the preliminary reports, received by the Commission’s monitoring team across the country, indicated that all electoral materials arrived on time and the officials including, electoral officers, agents of candidates and security officials were all at post.

According to the EC, there was no cause for alarm, everything went on as expected at all the polling stations that officials visited in some parts of Accra and there was no violence or any security breach.

Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman in-charge of Corporate Services at the EC, noted that per the standards of the Commission, the processes went on smoothly and orderly and indicated that “people in queues waited patiently for their turns to cast their ballots,  at time of visit at 0800 hours, an average of 30 people had voted, turnout was good and the atmosphere continued to the end.

“The commission received information on some minor challenges and took steps to address them hence a successful and peaceful district level elections,” Dr Asare touted.

At least 57,030 candidates contested the nationwide assembly and unit committee elections, of the figure, 18,510 vied to become assembly members, while 38,520 contested for Unit Committees with 6,272 electoral areas and each electoral area was represented by one assembly member and five Unit Committees for every electoral area.

However, elections was not held in Nkoranza North, Nkoranza South and Lower Manya Krobo Districts, where terms of representatives will expire in 2022.  

A joint security force of 48,000 officers and other ranks were deployed to provide security across the nation, while Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) deployed 1,100 persons observed and monitored the polls, additionally, polling officials received training and exhibited high level of integrity, transparency and fairness as they complied with tenets of electoral laws.

The contestants of district assembly elections comprised 17, 601 males and 909 females and at Unit Committee level, 3,751 females contested with 34,769 males. -GNA
