The Vice President, Dr Mahammudu Bawumia, cut sod on Saturday in Tamale to commence construction work on a 600-bed girls’ dormitory and housemistress bungalow for the Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO)
The GH¢2 million project, being sponsored by MTN Ghana Foundation, as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility would be completed in eight months.
Dr Bawumia who is an old student of TAMASCO commended the MTN Ghana Foundation for the project and described it as, “The largest single infrastructure investment in the school since its establishment”.
He emphasised that the project would add to continuing efforts to promote the education of the girl-child in the area.
“It is an investment in the empowerment of the adolescent girl, which is important in breaking the intergenerational transmission of poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination, and building a better future for our girls,” the Vice President stated.
The Vice-President emphasised on the importance of education particularly Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which had been included in the new basic curriculum.
Dr Bawumia indicated that the government was committed to improving quality of teaching and learning at all levels, hence the huge investment in the education sector.
Mr Selorm Adadevoh, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, stressed the importance of education in the lives of individuals in particular and the country as a whole.
He stated that the MTN Ghana viewed education as the backbone of the country’s development, hence the MTN Ghana Foundation’s decision to invest in the sector.
Mr Adadevoh assured that MTN Ghana Foundation would continue to invest in education in order to create an enabling environment for both teachers and students.
Mr Sayibu Wilberforce Adams, Headmaster of TAMASCO, commended MTN Ghana for their continued support to the school.
According to him, construction of a girls’ dormitory would not only reduce pressure on the existing facilities but would also offer opportunity for the school to admit more girls into the school.
Mr Adams thereby pledged to offer the needed assistance and collaborate with the contractor to ensure quality work.
