The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Stanbic Bank, Mr Kwamina Asomaning, has urged unemployed graduates to explore new opportunities that exist in the digital space to become relevant in the current economic meltdown facing the country.
He explained that opportunities existed in highly sought-after disciplines in areas such as coding, web development and app design, data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“Be willing to break a new mold of opportunities and ideas. This is important because the world has redefined work as no longer a place you go but rather a thing you do,” he stated.
Mr Asomaning was addressing the 21st graduation and 32nd matriculation ceremony of the Catholic University of Ghana(CUG) at Fiapre near Sunyani on Saturday.
A total of 915 graduands made up of 315 undergraduates and 600 postgraduates who completed their course received their degrees, and diploma certificate.
The ceremony which is the first after the university attained a presidential charter in March this year attracted dignitaries including the apostolic Nuncio to Ghana most Rev. Henry M. Jagodzinski.
The Vice Chancellor of the CUG, Professor Daniel Ofori Obeng, in a welcome address said 973 students were admitted in the August and September admissions, and were pursuing their courses in the university.
He reminded them not to cheat in examinations because the sanctions they would receive when caught were too severe.
“Examinations are important but they are not everything, grades are good, but they don’t define you. Don’t let one examination or one grade defined your whole future. There is much potential right inside you,” he said.
He said the university had introduce new academic programs: BSc Business Analytics (Accredited), MSc. Accounting and Finance (Accredited), BSc communication Science and Digital Media Studies (Accreditation in progress), M.Phil. Accounting (Accreditation in progress), M.Phil. English Education (Accreditation in progress) and M.Phil. Finance (Accreditation in progress).
He added that the CUG would continue to develop more graduate programmes up to PhD level, and other innovative undergraduate programmes not to run by the public universities in the catchment areas as a matter of categorical imperative.
Prof. Obeng advised the student to abide by the rules and regulations governing the university in order not to fall foul of the law.
