Unemployed gets 4 months for peddling ‘wee’

A Ho circuit court has sentenced Wonder Gafatsi, 33-year-old unemployed man, to four months imprisonment in hard labour for peddling Indian hemp.

The court presided by Mrs Priscilla Dikro Ofori, asked convict to pay a fine of GH¢840.00 or in default serve another four months imprisonment, and ordered that Indian hemp be burnt.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Aboagye told the court that on August 31, 2017, at about 2:30pm, the Akatsi Police conducted a swoop at Gagbakope, a suburb of Akatsi, and arrested convict, who was carrying a black school bag on his back.

He said a search into the bag revealed quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

DSP Aboagye said the convict in his caution statement claimed ownership of the bag, but denied its contents.

Prosecution said the accused was arraigned on a preliminary charge after which the exhibits were taken to the Police Forensic Laboratory in Accra for examination.

DSP Aboagye said a report from the laboratory indicate that the dried leaves are ‘wee’. – GNA
