The Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ms Gita Honwana Welch, yesterday paid a farewell call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, in Accra.
She leaves office after serving the UNDP for almost two years.
Describing her experience in Ghana as fantastic, Ms Welch said Ghana had established itself as a country where democracy was striving.
She noted that despite challenges, the government was apt to the task of improving the livelihood of the citizenry in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) on poverty, peace and justice as well as gender equality to ensure that no one was left behind.
Ms Welch lauded the minister for her hospitality towards her, adding that “I’m glad the UNDP is taking its place in Ghana in terms of partnership with the government and other sectors”.
She said her office was ensuring a smooth transition and looking forward to relevant and continuous partnership with the government and the citizenry.
Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her part congratulated Ms Welch for her successful duty tour and for forging an excellent cooperation between the government and the United Nations (UN).
She said Ghana was committed to ensuring the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Partnership (UNSDP) 2018-2022, as it was aligned with the President’s vision of self-realised development.
Commending the UN for its continuous support to Ghana’s effort in achieving the SDGs, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the livelihood of the citizenry to further consolidate democratic governance.
