Uncompleted 3-storey building collapses at Ofankor

A three-storey building under construction, at Ofankor Market, near Asofan in Accra, collapsed over the weekend.

It was unclear what caused the collapse, but multiple sources blamed the heavy rains that occurred on Friday.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Assistant Divisional Officer Grade one (ADO1) Alex King Nartey, said no one was trapped in uncompleted building.

He said the GNFS could not confirm whether the uncompleted building was covered by valid building permit or documents, and that the service was investigating the cause of the collapse.

ADO1 Nartey said “the actual cause of the collapse has not been established, but I doubt if proper building materials were used or precautions were adhered to.

The tenants are attributing it to rains, but that shouldn’t be the cause of a whole building collapsing.”

The Ghanaian Times gathered that the police at Ofankor received information at about 11:20 am from the Police Headquarters Control Room that a storey building had collapsed at Ofankor poultry farm.

On arrival, the police met a care taker of the facility, who said that he woke up and found the pillars of the uncompleted building sinking, which finally collapsed.

Meanwhile when contacted, the Ofankor police corroborated the incident, but declined to speak to the Ghanaian Times and referred the journalist to the Police Regional Public Relations Officer or the Head of Public Relations Directorate at the National Headquarters, in Accra for more information on the incident.
