UG plans sports festival to mark 75th anniversary

The University of Ghana (UG) has lined up several sporting activities to mark its 75th anniversary celebrations.

The activities, include inter-hall games, athletics, Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Cross Country, staff games and others.

Speaking at the launch of the activities in Accra, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, said it was important to integrate sports into the 75th anniversary celebrations.

“Sports forms an integral part of the university’s growth and the national development as a whole, and it is important to include it in the entire anniversary event,” he stated.

He also commended the Sports Directorate for putting together strategies and programmes to promote the development of student athletes.

Professor Awandare, who chaired the event urged members involved in the UG@75 inter-hall games to ensure competitiveness, fun, respect, tolerance, and fair play towards one another.

The Director of Sports, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, expressed delight in the integration of sports into academia at UG.

Dr Bitugu said in 2022, several UG athletes were integrated into the Ghana national team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

He said, five sprinters and a high jumper have gained scholarships at universities in the United States of America to either continue their undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.

He attributed the feats to the careful and patient investment being made by the University through the Sports Directorate with support from University’s senior management.
