The Upper East Region has recorded zero road crash during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent, Williams Kpormegbe, has disclosed.
From December 24 to 26, he said the entire country recorded 98 accidents, out of which five vehicles from the Upper East Region were involved, leading to five injuries with no fatality.
In an interview with the Ghanaian Times in Bolgatanga, the MTTD Regional Commander explained that the achievement was a significant improvement upon that of the previous year, and department would work harder to maintain it.
Sup Kpormegbe indicated that the road safety campaign implemented by his outfit in collaboration with other road safety agencies, including the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) contributed immensely to the success.
He said the agencies worked together to take road safety campaign to the doorstep of road users, including drivers, transport operators and the passengers.
Supt Kpormegbe disclosed that MTTD personnel were at post in various communities to provide security and safety, and appealed to the public to cooperate with them, to deliver on their mandate.
The Upper East Regional Director of the NRSA, Mr Dennis Yeribu, commended stakeholders, including the MTTD and the DVLA for supporting road safety campaign.
He said the authority in collaboration with other stakeholders had trained at least 200 drivers in road safety.
Mr Yeribu assured that the management of the authority was working assiduously with the various political parties to deal with road safety concerns as election 2020 gets closer.
“We are wary of the year being an election one with the possibility of political activities being heightened in lieu of road safety concerns, so we have already contacted and shall be working with the political leadership,” he said.
“With the NRSA Act now being implemented, there shall be good control in the transport space especially commercial transport. We want to also enhance education to the populace taking advantage of technology and other mass social platforms,” Mr Yeribu stated.
