The Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS), a professional organisation dedicated to developing the intellect of children, has unveiled the winners of the 2018 UCMAS international competition held in Malaysia.
The UCMAS concept is a brain development programme run for over 300 schools through 50 learning centres for children below 15 years of age across the country.
Mr Roger Ohemeng, the Chief Executive Officer for UCMAS Ghana, addressing journalists in Accra said the programme which is its 23rd edition, is organised globally to unearth talents in the country who have proven that they can achieve greater heights when they are given the requisite training.
The ceremony, he said was to recognise the students and to congratulate them for making Ghana proud and for showing to the world the strength that they possessed.
He said there is an ongoing partnership between UCMAS Ghana and the Ghana Education Service, to work hand in hand by extending the services of the programme to every child in the country adding that they are committed to improving maths and science education among others to the benefit of the Ghanaian child.
He acknowledged some of the schools the students were from for their believe and confidence in their students.
The schools included Alpha-Beta School, Ancilla School, Star of the Sea School, and Acropolis School amongst others
Mr Ohemeng thanked the various heads of the schools and parents of the students for allowing their children to participate in the competition and hoped that UCMAS’ partnership with the schools would continue to flourish.
The guest speaker, Mr Andrews K. Quaning, Director of Science Education Unit at the Ghana Education Service (GES) in his speech lauded UCMAS for its attempts in enhancing arithmetic in the youths adding that they were in line with GES in developing creative thinking, memory power and boosting confidence to face challenges.
He congratulated the students for a job well done and urged them not to be distracted in any way.
“We need students like you to compete in the global market,” he added.
Ms Aseyenedi Esi Tamakloe, a student of Ancilla School aged 12, who took the award of Champion of the competition, said she was excited to have won the award and thanked UCMAS and her instructors for aiding her and her colleagues to win this award and promised to win more in the future.
