Two-time world champ Martinez aims to return

Former two-division world champion Sergio Martinez, who two years ago began a comeback, is planning to return to action in the United States.

“I’m back in the gym, I arrived from Argentina on July 4, I went on vacation because I worked a lot in Argentina,” Martinez said in a dialogue with Directv Sports.

The man from Buenos Aires confirmed that his next fight is being targeted to take place in the United States. Martinez is still without a firm date or opponent, but he states the next outing is likely to land in the month of October and he’s already started working in the gym.

Martinez last fought in the United States eight years ago, when he suffered a knockout loss to Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Due to lingering injuries, Martinez would retire from boxing in the aftermath.

He finally returned to the sport in August of 2020.

Since then, the 47-year-old veteran has stepped in the ring four times.

The last time Martinez saw action was back in January in Madrid, when he picked up a ten round unanimous decision win over British contender Macaulay McGowan, who went down two times in the fight.

Martinez now has a record of 55 wins, three defeats and a single draw. 30 of his wins came by knockout. – BoxingScene
