Transport owners reduce number of passengers to prevent COVID-19 spread

Road transport operators yesterday implemented directives on social distancing in vehicles by reducing passengers in their vehicles to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

This follows a directive from President Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo-Addo on COVID-19 in consultation with the transport operators.

The Ghanaian Times’  visit to some principal streets of Accra such as Kwame Nkrumah interchange, Tema Station, and the Central Business District revealed that taxi cabs which usually had five occupants on board had reduced to three passengers.

Commercial drivers had few passengers on board their vehicles.

Some motorcycle riders had only a rider without a pillion.

The personnel of the Ghana Police Service were also at vantage check points such as Nima ensuring that the drivers abided by the law.

The security personnel were seen stopping drivers and alighting recalcitrant passengers who were not complying with the directives on social distancing.

It would be recalled that President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo Addo on Friday night announced a temporary lockdown in some areas in the country as part of measures to contain the spreading of the COVID-19.

For the next two weeks residents of Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Obuasi are expected to stay indoors, except when they needed to buy food, water, medicine, undertake banking transactions or visit public toilet.

The lockdown, according to the president was necessary measures to control the spread of the disease.

Ghana has so far recorded 152 cases with five deaths.
