The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a trader to six months imprisonment in hard labour for causing harm to a “Good Samaritan.”
Isaka Adamu, 21, convict, hit the head of Samuel Lawson with a stick, making him unconscious, when the victim prevented him from punishing a suspected thief.
Adamu admitted the offence when he appeared before court and was jailed.
Police Inspector Wisdom Alorwu told the court presided over by Ms Adelaide Abui Kaddey that Mr Lawson, the Complainant, was a security man with UCS Security Company, at Dzorwulu, while Adamu, an Ivorian, was a trader living around Abossey Okai Central Mosque, in Accra.
The court heard that on January 21, 2023, the complainant, who was on duty at Omini Bank, Abossey Okai, spotted Adamu with a stick chasing a young man, who was running towards his duty post, at about 4pm.
Insp Alorwu said the complainant asked Adamu why he was chasing the young man, and he (Adamu) said the young man had stolen his iron rod.
The prosecution said complainant advised Adamu to stop pursuing the alleged thief, who ran away and sought protection with a crowd.
Insp Aloewu said convict, who was disgruntled with the attitude and intervention of complainant became offended and without any provocation hit the head of complainant with the stick and run away.
He said the complainant fell unconscious and was rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.
A security guard on duty nearby, arrested Adamu and handed him over to the police Insp Alorwu said.
He said during investigations, Adamu admitted the offence but indicated that he did not intend to hit complainant’s head. After thorough investigations, convict was charged with the offence, Prosecution said. —GNA
