Thrills at Homowo festival race meeting

The 2nd Day of the Homowo festival race meetings at the Accra Turf Club on Saturday produced several thrilling finishes, giving punters a lot to cheer about.

In the last and 4th race of the day which combined top-division 3A horses and the Maiden Division (imported horses to make a debut on the track), Die Hard, owned by Ahmed Tijani and ridden by Ebenezer Kotey made mince meat of the event, stretching its lead from the first bend until running past the finishing post.

Far on the heels of ‘Die Hard’ were ‘Shasha’ and ‘Simply Great’ in 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.

In the 3rd Race of the Day, stylish jockey, Dennis Ahinakwa on ‘African Queen’ beat Jockey S. Sumaila on ‘Baby Jet’ at the finishing when most punters thought Baby Jet had won.

The photo-finish by the two horses from which ‘African Queen’ emerged the winner, drew thunderous applause from the Punters. ‘Stable Dancer’ which had earlier held the punters spell bound with its sprints, woefully ended the race taking up the 3rd position.

In the 2nd Race, ‘Yaayi’, ridden by J. Mensah in a seven furlongs (1,400 metres) race led the pack to finish in a time of 2:05 seconds with ‘Nine Eleven’ and ‘Sweet Morinus’ taking up the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.

The 1st Race saw ‘Secret Lady’ emerge the winner with ‘Wonder Boy’ and ‘Happiness’ following in 2nd and 3rd positions.

Mr Armah Turkson, Secretary to the Board of Stewards appealed to corporate bodies to sponsor racing to mark their anniversaries.

Racing continues on Saturday, at the new location, a walking distance from Borteyman Junction, on the Tema-Accra Motorway.
