The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (GHANA) has started work on a six-storey hospitality complex at East Legon, in Accra.
The project estimated at GH₵31,000,000, is being funded by the TEWU Fund and it is expected to be completed in 36 months.
The TEWU Hospitality Complex has two big conference rooms with 200 seating capacity each, 79 rooms, mini conference rooms, restaurant, and underground car park, among others.
An official contract signing and ground breaking ceremony, has taken place in Accra involving the TEWU leadership and Management Committee members, led by the National Chairman, Peter K. Lumor, and the Acting General Secretary Mark D. Korankye.
Also present were the First National Vice Chairman, Mr Bismark Bawah, Second National Vice Chairperson, Florence Agyei-Wiredu, the TEWU Fund Consultant, Fiifi Odoom, staff of the National Secretariat, a representative of the Secretary General of TUC (GH) and officials of Brigson Company Limited.
In his remarks, the National Chairman of TEWU, Peter K. Lumor expressed happiness that the union had finally started work on the East Legon project.
“For many years it has been my passion and conviction to see this project done and luckily it has taken off,” he said.
Mr Lumor asked for cooperation among the key stakeholders of the union to ensure successful execution of the project which would not only benefit TEWU members, but also generate employment opportunities for other Ghanaians.
He said the project would serve as a befitting honour and appreciation to past leaders for their foresight in securing lands for the union, which had made it possible to undertake projects to diversify the sources of income for the union.
The Acting General Secretary of TEWU, Brother Mark Denkyira Korankye said the project was part of the strategic agenda to develop all lands the union had acquired across the country.
According to him, the TEWU Hospitality Complex at East Legon located in a very prime area of Accra, was an ample testimony of how members’ dues and other contributions under the TEWU Fund Scheme and TEWU Development Levy were being used judiciously to sustainably boost the financial base of the union to the benefits of members of the union.
“The East Legon TEWU Hospitality Complex is the biggest project the union is undertaking, after successfully redeveloping the TEWU House at Abeka-Lapaz into a modern complex,” he said.
Mr Korankye commended members of TEWU’s decision-making structures like the Management Committee, the Project Committee and the National Executive Council for readily approving the project which is being funded by the TEWU Fund.
The Head of Organising at TUC (Ghana), Brother Eric Amoadu-Boateng who represented the TUC Secretary General, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, commended TEWU’s past and current leaders for working hard to improve on the lot of their members.
