Techiman South violence
is regrettable — MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Techiman South Constituency in the Bono East Region, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has stated that the violence that occurred at Techiman South Constituency during Election 2020 is regrettable and must not be allowed to recur.

“What happened was an unfortunate incident that characterised our election in Techiman South because we had engaged in a campaign devoid of tensions, acrimony, and there was unity among the parties.

“When the elections came to a close, and just at the declaration point, there were some misunderstandings, and a confrontation ensued between some of my constituents and the security agencies leading to the unfortunate and we have taken a number of steps to understand exactly what happened and seek justice for those who were affected so it doesn’t repeat,” Mr Korsah assured.

The Techiman South legislator, who has been nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Deputy Minister of Local Government Decentralisation and Rural Development, made the disclosures when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

“I am personally constructing a house for the families of some victims, paid for hospital bills of other victims who were hospitalised and some measures being taken to secure justice for persons who suffered brutalities in the area during the elections,” Mr Korsah intimated.

Out of the seven persons who died during the 2020 elections violence, two of them died in the Techiman South constituency, while six others were injured and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which accuses the NPP of rigging the election, is challenging the outcome of the results in court as announced by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Mr Korsah indicated that he was aware police investigation into the issue had been concluded, with further action on outcome to come out soon however, the sad event had rather brought them together in ensuring peace in the constituency.

Members of the New Patriotic Party in the Techiman South constituency in March 2021 petitioned the Ministry for The Interior  to investigate the shooting incident that occurred on December 8, 2020 at the Techiman South Collation Centre to help constituents know exactly what caused the unfortunate incident and give the victims justice.
