Teachers Unions Strike: Govt, Organised labour agree  15 % COLA

After a back and forth between striking labour unions and the government, the parties have now agreed on a 15-percent Cost of Living Allowance (COLA)  to be paid to all public-sector workers.

It takes retrospective effect from July 1, 2022.

With this new agreement, all planned industrial actions have been suspended immediately.

This was the third meeting between the government and labour unions since the demand for COLA started.

The delegation from the government side comprised the Minister for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah and Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta together with his Deputy, Abena Osei Asare.

A meeting between the government and the unions on Tuesday was adjourned due to the refusal of some labour unions to call off their strike before negotiations would commence.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations asked the striking teachers to return to classroom immediately.

As at press time, the teachers unions were yet to respond to the minister’s request to return to work.
