A modern community library has been inaugurated for the Tapa-Amanya community in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region to help promote the culture of reading among pupils and students.
The landmark project, which was executed by the Tapa-Amanya Community Charity Organisation (TACCO), was stocked with reading materials as well as computers to ensure that pupils, students and members of the community use the facility and become abreast with developments in the world.
The Oti and Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority (GLA), Mr Guy Amarteifio, commended TACCO for the successful completion of the project at the time community libraries were becoming a major source of accessing information for development.
He noted that developed countries were those who depended largely on libraries for accurate and timely information..
He assured the community that the regional office of the Ghana Library Authority would take over the administration of the facility for effective management.
Mr Amarteifio called on the Tapa-Amanya community to form a library Management committee to support management of the facility, noting that the government was doing its best to promote education in the country but could not do it alone.
He, therefore, appealed to Community Based Organisations (CBOs), philanthropists and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to support education in the region.
The Biakoye District Chief Executive (DCE), Millicent Kabuki Carboo, who inaugurated the library, noted that libraries were the pivot on which education revolved and urged the people of Tapa-Amanya and its environs to take advantage of the new library to develop themselves since education was key to development.
She noted that the changing trend in education had encouraged people to either learn vocational skills or go through the traditional secondary educational system, stressing the importance of technical, vocational education.
The Biakoye District Director of Education, Madam Roseline Kafui Ofori, noted that the new library would go a long way to promote research among pupils, students and even members of the community and also serve as an attractive centre for exchange of ideas among pupils, students and members of the community for development.
Madam Ofori was optimistic that the new library would provide an appropriate environment for pupils and students to spend more of their time instead of idling, and engaging in social vices.
