Take advantage of ICT literacy programmes – Minister

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD), Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has urged women to take advantage of the numerous Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programmes being implemented by the government to become literate in the sector.

She said ICT was not the preserve of men, and women could also climb higher in the sector if they availed themselves to ICT opportunities offered by the government and the private sector.

The Minister said at the closing ceremony for the training of 50 women in ICT in Accra on Friday.

The training is under the Women/ Girls in ICT initiative of the MoCD being held in collaboration with Huawei Ghana limited.

Under the theme:  “Connected Girls, Creating Brighter Futures,” the participants were taken through a 10-day training in Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security.

The Minister stressed the need to empower Ghanaians, especially girls and young women to take up careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) fields.

She urged girls to take up courses in STEM since they were so many job avenues in the ICT sector.

The Minister implored the participants to put into practice what they had learnt and mentor the girls in their communities.

“I believe that this training has given you an exposure to the world of possibilities through ICTs, will enable you the enterprising young ladies occupy permanent positions in the industry and impact the society,” she added.

She pledged the ministry’s commitment to initiate innovative programmes to bridge the gender-digital gap.

She commended Huawei for its continuous commitment and support to enhancing ICT education and training and bridging the gender digital gap.

The Director of Public Relations at Huawei Ghana Limited, Ms Jennie Zhou, urged the participants to be ambassadors of the programme and impart the knowledge they had acquired to the society.

“This is just the beginning of the journey for you, I believe this training will open you up to opportunities and make you one of the best in the industry as you step out to develop upon what you have studied,” she stated.

She entreated them not to relent on their oars, but continue to pursue further training to build their capacity.

As part of the programme, participants who excelled in the training were presented with cash prizes and Huawei products.
