SWAG saddened by Atsu’s death

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) says it is saddened by the tragic passing of Ghana international, Christian Atsu, following the earthquake in Turkey.

“SWAG is extremely traumatised, particularly on the narratives leading to the sudden departure of such a much-loved son of our country.

“We are pained at the loss of a brilliant footballer who had risen through the ramshackle of the game to attain international reputation; a dedicated gentleman, who had volunteered a lot of time and commitment to his football career for both club and country.”

According to SWAG, the demise of Atsu comes as a monumental loss to the entire Ghanaian football community due to his “huge sense of conviviality and benevolence, notably, his charity works in Ghana.”

“We deeply hurt, nevertheless, takes solace in those magnificent dispositions of comrade Atsu which reinforce the fact that the years spent in his chosen career are worth remembering and eulogizing,” SWAG said.

“Our heartfelt condolences go to the wife and children, his extended family, and the entire football fraternity.”

Atsu, who represented his country 65 times, played for a number of clubs including Everton, Chelsea, Newcastle in England, and Porto in Portugal. At the time of his tragic death, he was plying his trade in Turkey for Hatayspor.
