Students clash with KNUST security: 11 arrested, 1 injured

A student from the Katanga Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), is on admission at the university’s hospital, after sustaining injuries when he was allegedly beaten by the KNUST security.

This followed a clash between the students of Katanga Hall and the security personnel of the KNUST, at the university campus, over the weekend.

Eleven others, including an alumnus of the hall, were arrested by the police at KNUST during the altercation that ensued when the KNUST security personnel attempted to stop the students from holding a vigil on the premises of the university, an activity that has been suspended by the management of the KNUST.

The 11 students were yet to be granted bail by the police as at the time of filing the report.

The detention of the students caused a stir, after some relatives of the arrested students stormed the police station, and demanded the release of their children and wards.

The relatives told newsmen that the students were arrested by the KNUST internal security and handed over to the police for holding a vigil.

They accused KNUST authorities of intimidating and victimising students of the Unity Hall and Katanga Hall since the conversion of both halls into mixed ones.

A notice issued earlier this year by management of the university, suspended all activities on campus that previously led to altercations between students, especially those at Katanga and Unity halls.
